The idea behind ‘The Elements’ project, which comprises works relating to water, air, fire and earth, emerged when Joel Meyerowitz recorded a video about Olympic divers in a sports swimming pool in Florida. He observed from under the water how the bodies of the divers were surrounded by a cloud of endless oxygen bubbles as they entered the water which then channelled their way up to the surface to join the atmosphere again. The simultaneous fusion and dissolution of air and water makes their physical uniqueness and elementary force visible, providing new metaphysical insight through the dialogue with light, space and surface.
