With the effective use of style elements, accessories and meticulous light and shade design, Gernot Gleiss skilfully emphasises in his portrait series the individual personality of the people he depicts, bringing out the characteristic elements of their essential being, as reflected in the particularity of the moment, and revealing them as fascinating characters quite apart from their celebrity status. The portraits seem to be swathed in mystery, evoking questions about the story behind the outward depiction, be it in the case ofMarkus Lüpertz, who with all the trappings he has acquired as the “prince of painters” arouses our curiosity about his own work, or Tom, whose body art in itself allows us full freedom of interpretation.

As part of the ‘anSCHAUungen’ photo project, Gernot Gleiss presents portraits of people who have a particular connection to his home town of Klagenfurt. Through the effective use of style elements, accessories and tricky light and shade design, the portrait series by Gernot Gleiss specifically emphasises the individual personalities of the individuals depicted and highlights characteristic parts of their being which are reflected in the uniqueness of the moment and depict people as fascinating characters, aside from their notoriety. The portraits seem to be shrouded in mystery and raise the question as to the story behind the outward depiction.

In his portrait of Brandy Brandstätter, Gernot Gleiss gives an insight into the diverse and creative personality of this graphic designer and artist, his passion for drawing, his attention to detail and his penchant for Donald Duck. The portrait was acquired as an expression of appreciation for Brandy Brandstätter who has successfully designed the entire advertising range for the Kollitsch group for over two decades and whose unmistakeable style has had a significant influence on the corporate identity of the company.
