From the time he first joined the police force in 1948, Arnold Odermatt took photographs of accidents that occurred in the Swiss canton of Niederwalden, photographs that go far beyond the mere documentation of road accidents and private images taken by an amateur photographer. These images are the result of a deeply aesthetic disposition and skilled craftsmanship. Odermatt took many of his pictures from the roof of his VW bus, further enhancing their impact in terms of perspective. His motifs are always formally reduced, whether they are car wrecks after an accident, people from his professional or private life, everyday scenes, or the landscape of Switzerland.
