Brandstätter's paintings integrate form and formlessness, expressing the contrast between the earthbound nature of the body and the freedom of the spirit, which is able to break through the barrier to transcendence. Karl Brandstätter's etchings are influenced by his time with Johnny Friedlaender in Paris, one of the pioneers of modern colour etching.
